Faulty boilers or units that do not work correctly can put you, your family and anyone else who resides or works in your property with you at risk. Carbon monoxide poisoning, which can kill, is one of the risks that you take by not have your boiler serviced on a regular basis and that’s why it is vital that you have your boiler checked at least once a year. But what is servicing and what’s involved in the process of servicing? How do you know if it’s been done correctly?

Simply put, servicing is maintaining your boiler to ensure that any risks are reduced and to improve its efficiency, which could also help you to save money on your fuel bills. There are a few things that generally all boiler services should include, and you should always make sure that your service is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers or plumbers as they will be adequately trained on gas plumbing. Plumbers who are not Gas Safe registered could be putting you and themselves in danger so this is very important.
Generally, a service will begin with a look over your boiler to see if there are any obvious visual faults with it. The plumber or engineer will also check to ensure that it still meets safety standards. Next they will start the unit in order to check if there are any faults when it is switched on. Of course, any problems or faults will be fixed. The front of the unit will then be removed so that the inside can be checked including all components and any faults or broken parts can be identified. Once this has been checked the plumber will check that all boiler components are safely sealed and conduct a gas tightness test to ensure that no gas or other fumes can escape.
All parts of the boiler will then be cleaned (inside and out) to improve the boiler’s efficiency and then the gas valve will be adjusted to check that the burner is working correctly. The case of the boiler will then be put back in place and the engineer or plumber will check to ensure that it is sealed correctly. Once all of this has been completed you will generally receive a report of some description to confirm what has been done and what the finding of the service were.
Some plumbing firms will go as far as to give you safety and maintenance advice too, although sometimes this may have to be paid for but generally many firms these days will give you advice for free. It is best to book your boiler service in the warmer months of the year, as many plumbing firms get rather busy during winter when people begin to think about turning the central heating system on, which they often do not consider during summer. Be safe, not sorry and get your boiler checked on a regular basis to keep warm in the cold months of the year!
